It’s hot outside and what better time to do a Watermelon Unit?!? The Life of a Watermelon is a fun watermelon shaped book full of informational text that will guide your students through learning about the life cycle of a watermelon.
The Life of a Watermelon easily lends itself to opportunities for discussion and research. It would not only be great for a Watermelon Unit but an End of the Year or a Summer Unit, too.
There are options for creating interactive/flip pages if you choose as well as opportunities for students to discuss or research the appropriate colors to color pictures in the book. At the end, students label the life cycle of the watermelon if appropriate. ( If not, just delete that page.) When completed, students will have a watermelon shaped emergent reader that will help them to understand the life cycle of a watermelon … with a fun little twist at the end.
I also created some follow up worksheets to provide opportunities for students to apply the knowledge that they’ve acquired. These sheets come with both Easy and Advanced directions to better accommodate individual learners.

Doing a Watermelon Unit is so much fun! Such a fun way to incorporate so many skills. And when it gets hot, I just always think about watermelons and the watermelon patch. Not that you’ll find me there! 🙂 And thinking about the watermelon patch always makes me think about the book Watermelon Day. I can just feel that hot sand blistering my feet!

Way back when, I created a watermelon unit, Wild About Watermelons on my website, The Virtual Vine. That is like going into Grandma’s dusty attic full of cobwebs. I haven’t updated it in YEARS and what was once K-1st level activities is now laughable. But, if you want to venture inside to see if there’s anything you can use or adapt, click here.
I have another project in the process and more in mind. So make sure you’re on the email list so you won’t miss out on the freebies!
